“Ab initio many-body methods for nuclear structure”

February 8, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

UNC-CH Nuclear Chalk Talk
Ragnar Stroberg, TRIUMF
“Ab initio many-body methods for nuclear structure”
A major effort in modern nuclear theory is the solution of the many-body problem in a systematically improvable framework. In this talk, I will discuss approaches for solving the many-body Schrodinger equation for medium-mass nuclei, focusing primarily on the in-medium similarity renormalization group (IM-SRG) approach. In particular, I will outline recent developments in the valence space formulation, which enables treatment of systems presently unreachable by other methods, and the consistent treatment of transition operators, which will be essential for applications to searches for new physics. I will discuss some strengths and weaknesses and give a prospectus for future improvements.
