UNC-CH NUCLEAR CHALK TALK
Martin Hoferichter, University of Washington
“Analysis Strategies for General Spin-Independent WIMP-Nucleus Scattering”

Searches for dark matter via direct detection have reached impressive sensitivities in the last years, and further advances are expected with the advent of ton-scale experiments. To interpret a possible signal, or at least derive limits on the underlying physics beyond the Standard Model, one needs to be able to disentangle the BSM couplings from the hadronic and nuclear physics of the experiment. In the talk I will discuss how an analysis based on chiral effective field theory allows one to achieve this in a systematic way, including consequences for concrete analysis strategies for direct-detection experiments in the case of general coherent WIMP-nucleus scattering.
