It is with profound sorrow that we note the death of our cherished friend and colleague, Professor Eugen Merzbacher, on June 6, 2013. Dr. Merzbacher was Kenan Professor Emeritus and former Chair of the Department of Physics at UNC, Chapel Hill. He was a dedicated teacher of graduate and undergraduate students and the author of a well-known textbook in quantum mechanics. He served as chair from 1977-1982, and retired from the department in 1991. He was also former President of the American Physical Society.
Dr Merzbacher remained active in the life of the department through this year, and was a familiar presence at seminars, colloquia and other department events. His enthusiasm for physics and concern for students and colleagues alike will be missed.
A memorial service will be held June 15 at 1 p.m. at the Community Church of Chapel Hill at 106 Purefoy Rd. His family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Merzbacher Fund or to the TRIFORM Camphill Community.
