“Chalk Talk” Astronomy Seminar – Brooke Simmons

February 9, 2018 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

UNC-CH “Chalk Talk” Astronomy Seminar

Brooke Simmons, University of California, San Diego

“Galaxies, Black Holes, and Citizen Science: The Next Decade”

The coming years will see important advances in our understanding of galaxy evolution and black hole-galaxy co-evolution, powered by both targeted studies and the next generation of sky surveys. Citizen science has a major role to play in these discoveries, but it too must evolve in order to keep up with the volume, variety and velocity of anticipated data. This talk will describe specifically how multiple new surveys, anchored by two large HST programs and made possible by SOAR observations, will probe the nature of the black hole-galaxy connection and AGN feedback. It will also detail the means by which we will use machine learning and citizen science to enable and carry out galaxy population studies in current and future astrophysical surveys such as DES and LSST.
