“Physical Computing or It’s All About the Bodies”

September 14, 2015 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

UNC-CH PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY COLLOQUIUM
Tom Igoe, New York University
“Physical Computing or It’s All About the Bodies”
Digital media, both hardware and software, are highly adaptable and changing rapidly. The human body and our physical habits, on the other hand, don’t change so fast. At NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, we teach students to develop new applications for digital technology by starting with the physical actions, capabilities, and limitations of the people for whom they’re designing. Hardware design, software development, and interaction design are fundamental to the program. Graduate students in the program come from a variety of different disciplines. In our introduction to physical computing course, they learn and practice all of these skills, and apply them in service to their own professional disciplines.

In this talk, I’ll introduce the program and the lessons we’ve learned about teaching technology development to a wide variety of backgrounds.
