The UNC Physics and Astronomy Department is excited to announce that Dr. Aobo Li, a COSMS Fellow, will be presenting a talk at the upcoming Carolina Data Science Now seminar. The seminar, titled “Summer of AI, Part 1,” will take place on May 25th at 12 PM Eastern Time via Zoom. This event is part of the Carolina Data Science Now seminar series, organized by the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) and designed to highlight data science research across various disciplines at UNC-Chapel Hill.
The lightning talk by Aobo Li will delve into the fascinating intersection of data science and physics. Dr. Li, who joined UNC Chapel Hill as a Postdoctoral Research Associate and COSMS Fellow, has an impressive academic background. He received his B.S. in physics at the University of Washington in 2015 and completed his graduate work at Boston University as part of the KamLAND-Zen collaboration. In 2020, he earned his Ph.D., and since then, he has garnered recognition with numerous awards, including the prestigious American Physical Society 2023 Dissertation Award in Nuclear Physics, the UNC Postdoctoral Award of Research Excellence, and the NeurIPS 2022 ML4PS Workshop Outstanding Paper Award.
The Carolina Data Science Now seminar series aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing within the UNC-Chapel Hill academic community. In addition to Dr. Li’s presentation, the event will feature two other esteemed speakers from different disciplines. Dr. Thomas Hofweber, a professor of philosophy at UNC, will discuss the philosophy of AI and its impact on humanity. Dr. Katie Newhall, an associate professor of mathematics, will share her work on applied math problems related to magnetic systems, granular media, and active matter.
Following the presentations, there will be a guided panel, allowing attendees to engage in a Q&A session with the speakers. This interactive segment offers a unique opportunity to dive deeper into the topics discussed and gain further insights from the experts. Moreover, participants will have the chance to connect with the vibrant data science community at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Faculty and staff members at UNC are cordially invited to join this enriching seminar. Registration for the event is open, and interested individuals can register through the following link: https://t.co/LTGaEO7Yjw.
