Physics and Astronomy Chalk Talk – Matteo Agostini

February 5, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am

UNC-CH Physics and Astronomy Chalk Talk

Matteo Agostini, Technical University Munich

“Towards the Discovery of Neutrinoless Double-β Decay”

The neutrinoless double-β decay is a hypothetical nuclear transition predicted by most of the theories that explain the origin of neutrino masses and the dominance of matter over antimatter in our Universe. Its observation would be a breakthrough for particle physics and could be within the reach of the forthcoming projects. It is hence fundamental to design experiments able to perform a convincing discovery. The Germanium semiconductor technology opens the way for a background-free search of the neutrinoless double-β decay and will be used by the LEGEND Collaboration to maximize the discovery power. I will discuss the challenges of the field and of the LEGEND experiment along with my R&D plans.
