Recommendations for the DWE 2

  • Formal
    • Check spelling and grammar.
    • Label all figures.
    • Write informative figure captions.
    • Figure not discussed in text should be dropped.
    • Define all variables in equations
    • Citations need to be reproducible.
    • Use definite, specific, concrete language.
    • Definition of acronyms at first use.
  • Structural
    • Explain concepts clearly and concisely.
    • Keep related concepts together.
    • Structure the report: What are the main questions, how have they been addressed?
    • Citations to support your claims need to be appropriate (specific, original).
  • Other comments
    • Beware of “citation chains”
    • Keep readership in mind (consistent change of level of discussion; explanation of concepts etc).
    • Use literature review to tell story in your own words.
    • Make sure literature cited is relevant for your project/discussion.


 

Recommendations for the Thesis Proposal Presentation

  • Content
    • Provide context for your project (physical motivation, potential impact).
    • Be aware of basic physics relevant to project.
    • Appropriateness and feasibility of approach and methods used.
    • Identify risks and possible mitigation strategies.
    • Provide a realistic schedule for project completion, including alternatives if applicable.
  • Presentation
    • Think of the presentation as a story you want to tell. What are the key points?
    • Stay within time constraint (usually not above 45 min, but never above one hour).
    • Keep audience in mind – you are the specialist.
    • Label figures and axes legibly.
    • Define variables in equations.
    • Visuals (diagrams, sketches, animations) over text.
    • Do not read off your slides.
    • Are your slides too cluttered?
    • Check your presentation on projector to be used (sit in back).
