Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) celebrates fifty years of service to research and education this month. It is one of only four Department of Energy Centers of Excellence in the United States. TUNL is a collaboration between UNC, Duke, and NCSU, and has been instrumental to the study of nuclear physics for several decades. The relationship between these North Carolina Universities has been vital to TUNL’s success. “We have lasted where other universities have failed because of the proximity of the three campuses and the fact that the critical number of people here make it possible,” says UNC Physics professor Tom Clegg, himself a long-standing member of TUNL.

The center has educated many alumni who have gone on to very remarkable careers in both the public and private sectors. A more detailed article about TUNL and some of its alumni can be found at UNC Research.
