UNC researchers are developing 3D x-ray technology for the dental industry that will provide more detailed images for diagnosis and care. The technology, called 3D Intraoral Imaging, was developed by UNC physics professors Otto Zhou and Jianping Lu. It utilizes carbon nano-tubes to generate the detailed images. UNC, in partnership with a company called Xintek, has been working closely with the UNC School of Dentistry in developing and testing the technology.
