PHYS 281L Final Project Presentations
Ben Levy
“On Wednesday, June 19, my PHYS 281 (Experimental Techniques in Physics) class will present their final project presentations, and I’m looking for some grad student volunteers to act as judges. Why should you do it? FREE FOOD! (Probably doughnuts and other refreshments).
Here are the details:
- When: 3:00 to 4:30pm on Wednesday, June 19
- Where: 258 Phillips Hall (the small conference room)
- Your Role: I have given my Experimental Techniques students an imaginary budget of $5,000. Their goal is to convince a panel of judges (a.k.a. “lab managers”) that the money should be spent on upgrading a lab experiment of their choosing from PHYS 281. As groups, they will give a total of three 20-30 minute persuasive talks in which they will present and argue for a budget. Your role will be to act as one of the judges — asking questions of the students, and writing anonymous feedback for them. •
- Who: All physics grad students, regardless of speciality, are encouraged to volunteer! I will work with my students to ensure that they target the proper audience with their talks (i.e. grad students who have a generally-good understanding of physics, but may have never seen the particular experiment in question)
- Why: You get my eternal gratitude, and even better, free food! (Also the students get practice exercising their oral communication skills).
If you would be willing to volunteer, great! Please send me an email (levyb@unc.edu) to confirm that you will attend. If you have any questions, please let me know.”
