Physics and Astronomy Chalk Talk – Danielle Speller

January 29, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am

UNC-CH Physics and Astronomy Chalk Talk

Danielle Speller, Yale University

“Advancing the Search for New Physics through Low Temperature Quantum Metrologies”

Understanding the nature and origin of matter is a critical component of the continuing search for new physics. In light of this goal, current and next-generation searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay and the direct detection of dark matter have been identified as top priorities in the long-range strategic plans for nuclear and particle astrophysics. In this talk, I will discuss these two core aims of my experimental program in the context of the CUORE and HAYSTAC experiments and their next-generation successors, along with plans to use new breakthroughs in quantum measurement techniques and the advancement of cryogenic technology to drive research and development of new detectors. With the immediate discovery potential of the axion searches and the ongoing efforts in neutrinoless double-beta decay, these projects have the potential to have immediate impact on the field and form the basis of an ongoing program of new and innovative searches for physics beyond the standard model.
