The faculty, research staff, and students of the UNC Department of Physics and Astronomy study the fundamental interactions of matter and energy on every scale, from the Planck length of strings to atomic nuclei to superclusters of galaxies. Our facilities include underground nuclear laboratories, telescopes on five continents, and nano-manipulators capable of moving and stretching single molecules. Our work is aimed at solving problems both practical and abstract. Please explore these pages to see examples of research programs in our department.
